Shoulder- Rotator Cuff Tear and Arthroscopic Repair

Injury to the rotator cuff is a common injury among athletes, the physically active, and people of all ages due to a traumatic injury or resulting from repetitive use of the shoulder joint. This type of injury can also be successfully treated via Arthroscopic Rotator Cuff Repair.

What is a rotator cuff injury?

The rotator cuff is actually a group of four muscles and their tendons that wraps around the front, back, and top of the shoulder joint, and which together help guide the shoulder through many motions, and also lend stability to the joint. Rotator cuff injuries are separated into repetitive use and traumatic.

In repetitive use injuries, repeated use of the shoulder joint can cause damage and tear of the rotator cuff tendons. This type of injury often occurs among baseball pitchers, tennis players, and football quarterbacks, but is also common due to wear from use in people of all ages, especially among older patients.

Traumatic injuries to the rotator cuff are seen after events such as falling on to an outstretched hand for example, or tackling and landing awkwardly in football, or a hard fall playing basketball, etc. The traumatic event can cause a rotator cuff injury by tearing the tendons.

What happens after the injury?

A rotator cuff tear is not an uncommon problem, and these injuries make many routine activities difficult, painful, and a frustrating problem.

Arthroscopic Rotator Cuff Repair can be used to surgically reattach torn tendons following a rotator cuff tear injury. This minimally invasive procedure uses an arthroscope to “see” inside the shoulder joint, and with

the aid of a video camera, surgical instruments are inserted and used to remove fragments and debris from the damaged tendon, and to perform the tendon reattachment or repair. As with ACL Knee Reconstruction, this procedure has been used successfully for many years on professional and amateur athletes, and is also routinely performed to help people of all ages regain maximum use of their shoulder and resume normal routines and physical activities, and for athletes to regain their form and perform at the highest levels.

Dr. Manouel has been performing Arthroscopic Rotator Cuff Repair surgery successfully for over 10 years on patients of all ages, and applies his extensive knowledge of Sports Medicine to treat athletes using this technique.
