A Quick Look at Shoulder Impingement Syndrome

shoulder inflammation

Shoulder impingement syndrome means that the structural components of your shoulder impinge upon, or rub against, the tendons in the shoulder. Impingement can also affect the bursa, which is a sac in the joint that provides lubrication. Shoulder impingement syndrome can cause pain when lifting the arm. For example, you might experience pain when reaching overhead to put on your coat. If left untreated, this type of orthopedic injury can cause bursitis and tendonitis of your rotator cuff tendons. In severe cases, you could eventually suffer a torn rotator cuff.

An orthopedic surgeon can diagnose shoulder impingement syndrome with imaging studies, such as an ultrasound or MRI. You may gain relief of your symptoms with medications and physical therapy. However, if you have suffered a rotator cuff tear, you will need orthopedic surgery to repair it.
